YOU GOTTA LOVE DEMOCRACY

Good grief.  “Election officials in Newport News said Tuesday that Shelly Simonds beat incumbent Republican Del. David Yancey by 1 vote. The recounted votes still must be certified by a court Wednesday, although officials expected that no ballots would be challenged.”  This makes the Virginia House 50/50, with two recounts to go.  I really do think this is our year.

My guess is that a lot of people who decided at the last minute that they would take the trouble to vote are very glad that they did; and that a lot who decided to stay home are very unhappy that they did.

This is an illustration of a point that I very inarticulately tried to make about "the cause" of Trump's victory: the emails, or the Comey letters, or her message, or Clinton fatigue, or the decision to take Wisconsin and Michigan for granted and spend time and money in Arizona or Georgia--and on and on.

The answer: not ALL of the above, but EACH of the above. If any one of them had not happened, Clinton would have won. Similarly, if any one of the votes for the winner in Virginia had not be cast, the result would have been different. (It would have taken two not voting to lead to the Republican's winning; according to the Washington Post, in the case of a tie, the winner is decided by lot--a flip of a coin!)

It now appears that a single ballot, previously declared uncounted, has been counted, by the judges in charge of certification, for the Republican candidate. This means there is now officially an exact tie for the office, which means the winner is determined "by lot."

Now the only vote that counts is a single instance of luck.
